OPT stands for Optional Practical Training. This program allows international students in the United States with an F-1 visa to work temporarily in their field of study after completing their academic program. OPT provides an opportunity to gain practical experience and apply the knowledge gained during studies in a professional setting.

To apply for OPT, here are the general steps:
  • Eligibility: Ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements for OPT. Generally, you must be an F-1 student enrolled full-time for at least one academic year in a degree program at a U.S. educational institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
  • Requesting an OPT recommendation: Contact your designated school official (DSO) or international student advisor to request an OPT recommendation. They will assist you with the necessary paperwork, such as filling out Form I-20, to establish your eligibility and recommend you for OPT.
  • Application to USCIS: Once you have the OPT recommendation, you must submit Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Along with the form, you must include the required supporting documents, such as photographs, copies of your current and previous I-20 forms, a copy of your passport identification page, and the OPT recommendation.
  • USCIS processing: USCIS will review your application and, if approved, issue an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The EAD card is a work permit that authorizes you to work in the United States for a specific period.
  • Finding employment: Once you receive your EAD card, you can seek jobs in your field of study. Remember that the work you engage in during OPT must be directly related to your major area of study.

Reporting requirements: During your OPT period, you must report certain information to your DSO, such as changes in employment, residential address, or personal contact information. Your DSO will guide the reporting requirements.
